Preserving and Presenting the Heritage of Carondelet

The Carondelet Historical Society

was organized in 1967 as a 501(c)(3) corporation by a group of residents and civic leaders in the Carondelet area. We are located in the historic Des Peres School, established in 1873 & listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1981.

The site of the first public kindergarten in the United States. First year enrollment at the school included 42 students. The room has been refurbished to look exactly as it did in 1876 and contains some of Froebel's early "Gifts of Occupation."
