NiNi Harris, "Romances, Immigrants, and Bob Hope at Jefferson Barracks"
In 1826, the high ground south of St. Louis that overlooked the Mississippi River was chosen as the site for the U.S. Army’s frontier outpost. Jefferson Barracks became the site of the Army’s first Basic Training program, the first parachute drop, and the birth of the U.S. Cavalry. Jefferson Barracks was also the place where immigrants served their new country, where West Point graduates met and married St. Louis girls, and where Bob Hope brought laughter to young scared recruits who were destined for the battlefields of World War II.
Author NiNi Harris first explored the wooded bluffs of Jefferson Barracks while on family picnics as a child. Those daylong adventures spurred a lifelong interest in the 120-year history of the U.S. Army Post. In her forthcoming book, Jefferson Barracks: Defending the Nation Since 1826, she presents sights, sounds, conflicts, and romances from every chapter of the history of Jefferson Barracks.
